Learn how to use your subtitles on the TV

If you are hosting someone who is deaf or hard of hearing at your house for dinner, a party or even Christmas — make sure you learn how to use your subtitles. Particularly if you are intending to watch something on the telly.

You can prepare in advance by following these two simple steps:

#1: Make sure that you are ready to happily turn on the subtitles. Some people detest watching TV with subtitles and find them really annoying. But you know what is even more annoying? Staring at a TV screen blankly and not understanding anything being said. So be ready to put up with it (and hide any resentment or annoyance).

Note: If something doesn’t have subtitles available be prepared to watch something else instead without kicking up a fuss about it.

#2: Know how to work the subtitles. Whatever TV, remote, add-ons etc that you have, make sure you know where your subtitles button or settings are. Hopefully it will be obvious but it can be a hassle messing around trying to work out how they work and missing what you want to watch when you could be sitting watching something happily together.
