So after the last cinema experience where no subtitles were available. I decided that this time that as it wasn’t an independent film and it was a mainstream movie with subtitles that I was going to ask for the subtitles to be included in the movie particularly as it was even longer than last time. Over 2 hours in the dark without subtitles was not something I was going to tolerate this time.
My view is that reasonable adjustments is more than just reasonable adjustments in the workplace. Everything related to your job should be accessible. This includes training, workplace events and networking. In an ideal world the firm should have my adjustments on record and make the adjustments automatically when they are organising an event or training session (or ask me if I need them). At the moment I have to ask each time I want reasonable adjustments (and I have only just got to a place where I feel comfortable enough to sometimes ask for adjustments).
So it took me a couple of weeks to build up the confidence to ask for Subtitles to be shown at the cinema. The firm was great, they came back to me and said they would ask the cinema to provide subtitles and they came back with a couple of options. I opted for subtitles on screen. However, this was still an awkward decision. Everyone in the room would have to put up with subtitles. People that I work with, but didn’t know. So many questions flood my thoughts: What would they think? Would everyone know it was me that asked for subtitles? Would they complain? What if they didn’t work on the day?
However, in the end the subtitles worked, I enjoyed the movie and I don’t think anyone complained (at least not directly to me – Phew!).
