It is a new year and an opportunity to re-visit and review my new year’s resolutions.
I felt like 2023 was a good year.
This year I want to be more intentional.
#1: Explore disability issues and culture.
I am continuing to explore disability issues and educate myself. I once again got out of the habit of writing and last year mainly wrote personal diary posts – for 2024 it is time to broad out again and educate myself more.
Goal: Write a blog post a month on something that will teach you about disability issues, history or culture.
#2: Create a Community.
As I’ve mentioned Disability usually doesn’t come with a built-in community. However, the past few years I’ve been building my relationships with other disabled legal professionals through the Disabled Solicitors Network, my firm’s disability network and the other ED&I/Disability initiatives that I get involved with.
Goal: Continue to build connections and communities (and write more about this experience).
#3: Speak up and Be a Role Model
As I’ve taken on more responsibility (both internally and externally) I have become much more conscious about the need to speak up and to be a role model to others.
There are not enough openly disabled role models.
Goal: continue to speak up and be a role model to others (and share more about this experience).
#4: Raise awareness.
A combination of all of the above is to also promote disability awareness (both inside and outside the office). So it is important to keep the conversation going — so my final goal is to continue to write on a regular basis about my own personal experiences and thoughts and to continue to share resources that I find.
Goal: a worthy goal and one I plan to continue in 2024.
Goals/Targets:
As I’ve had these goals (objectives?) for a while, this year I wanted to actually set some specific goals about what I would like to achieve/share:
#1: Write a blog post a month on something that will teach you about disability issues, history or culture (12x posts by the end of 2024).
#2: Engage in Community Activities – join networking groups and attend events (share more information about disability communities and events on the blog), start attending coffee mornings again. (12x posts by the end of 2024).
#3 and #4: Write more about my role as chair of my firm’s disability network and write more about this/share resources. (12x posts by the end of 2024).
#4: Continue writing my “journal” style entries documenting my experience. (12x posts by the end of 2024).
#4: Publish more transcripts. (12x transcripts by the end of 2024).
Ambitious target (more than 1 post a week), but let’s see how we get on 🙂
